Reacting to the civil nuclear agreement signed by the UK and US at COP29 to speed up delivery of advanced nuclear technologies (link), Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the Nuclear Industry Association, said:

“This is a very important partnership between two countries committed to new nuclear and we welcome the strong statement from UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband highlighting nuclear’s role in both energy security and decarbonisation of industry.

“Nuclear produces clean power and clean heat making it invaluable as we try and decarbonise hard to abate sectors and the UK has a real opportunity to be at the forefront of developing and delivering these technologies at scale so we can create jobs and attract investment.

“Nuclear has featured heavily at COP29 with over 30 countries joining the UK in committing to tripling global nuclear capacity. It’s important that we match the ambition of countries like the US that want to add an extra 200 GW of nuclear by 2050, and develop our own clear nuclear plan that builds industry confidence.”

Notes to Editors

  • The UK has nine reactors across five nuclear sites providing around 14% of the country’s electricity from 5.9 GW of capacity. Of the current nuclear fleet, only Sizewell B will be online after 2028. Hinkley Point C is due to come online between 2029 and 2031.
